The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has caused many new challenges and changes to our daily lives – and these have been particularly disruptive to children. Going from a normal daily school routine with friends and extracurriculars to being stuck at home with adults can be extremely stressful and disorientating to children. How can you help them transition to at-home learning without compromising their educational experience? We’ve got some tips to help you adapt!
Five Ways to Help Your Child Adjust to In-Home Learning
1. Create a dedicated learning space
It’s hard for anyone to do work in a space where they’re accustomed to relaxing or playing. This is particularly true for children! Create a space within your house that is dedicated to learning and doing school work. Ideally, it’s a room that’s been converted into a home classroom, but any ‘carved out’ area will work, even if it’s just a corner of an existing room.
2. Obtain a dedicated learning device, if possible
In conjunction with #1, it will also be difficult if your child is asked to focus on learning when using a tablet or computer that they’re accustomed to playing games on. The temptation to engage in other activities might be too strong to resist. An alternative laptop or tablet which only includes educational software is a good solution here, in order to focus on the task at hand.
3. Monitor your child’s learning
Whether you’re homeschooling or attending an online preschool, you can’t always rely on materials or electronics to teach, and walk away. Try to check in periodically or be near to your child while they’re learning as much as you can, to ensure they stay focused and don’t get distracted.
4. Incorporate video elements
Look for online classes that include videoconferencing, to help your child maintain their social and emotional development while learning at home. As previously suggested, something like an online preschool is a great tool, as most programs include a video element and allow your child to interact directly with an instructor and other students.
5. Remember to schedule breaks
Even when learning at home, children should still get a “recess” and other short breaks that allow them to relax and recenter in between lessons. Try to work in movement and other physical activity as well. This will help them balance both mind and body while they’re learning and growing.
